Impact of the developing endocannabinoid system in rats on the modulatory influence of stress on adolescent ethanol intake

SP9 deals with three major objectives that are based on the evaluation of stress on development and behavior in the context of the ECS. Thus, we will examine the ontogeny of stress-reactivity in adolescence and the developmental consequences of stress exposure on the ECS in rodents. Further experiments will elucidate the impact of different stressors on the initiation of drug (alcohol) intake and reward during critical periods of adolescence. By using a new genetic rat model we will investigate whether and how genetic modulations of the developing ECS might influence stress-induced drug intake during adolescence, which will also be verified via pharmacological intervention. It is of high importance for the understanding of possible risk factors to enhance our knowledge on the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the influence of stress on the initiation of drug intake during adolescence and puberty. Our findings will help to develop campaigns for teenagers aiming to prevent the initiation of drug use in young age.
